Quoting Sources Correctly

Inserting quotations is an excellent technique for adding color to any piece of writing.  It’s also one of the writing elements that novice writers get wrong a lot of the time.

How To Properly Use Quotations In Your Essays

Quotations, when used wisely, can make a strong impact in your essays.  After all,  essays tend to drone on in the same voice — the author’s — the whole.  With quotations, you can add a different voice from your own, augmenting your ideas and adding an interesting aspect to your writing.

Using Quotes Effectively

At some point in writing any piece, you will want to use quotations to help support an argument.  Here are some ideas to ensure you that you use them in the most effective way possible.

How Much Of A Text You Should Quote?

When quoting for a source material, the idea is always to quote as little as possible.  Quote just enough for the reader to understand the main idea and create the desired effect, filling in the rest with your own words.

Quoting Too Much

Inserting too much quotations in your writing is one of the most common mistakes inexperienced writers make.  While the reasons for doing so will vary among some people, it’s generally similar: they think that cutting down a quote diminishes the source’s ideas.
