How To Write To Informative Papers

Writing an informational essay or any type of material whose purpose is to inform the reader?  Here are some things to keep in mind to make sure you get the best results out of them:

  1. Be conversational, but slightly detached.  A conversational tone makes everything readable.  However, it can also make the writing feel less authoritative.  To fill the gap, imagine yourself as your favorite teacher in college who speaks in a way you can relate to, yet maintains a fair amount of objectivity and detachment that compels you to show them respect.
  2. Use lists.  Lists help make presenting a series of information easy to read and understand.  If you’re looking to inform readers, there are few more effective tools  than this.
  3. Use examples and illustrations.  Don’t rely solely on descriptions and explanations, many of which could simply go over readers’ heads.  Instead, use illustrative examples to clarify ideas.  They’re easier to relate to and tend to stick with people longer.
  4. Tone down the humor.  Mild humor is always welcome.  It should be included as an aid to inform the reader, though, not an end on its own (remember: your purpose isn’t to entertain).  Keep it occasional and only when it fits in the context.
  5. Repeat hard concepts in different ways.  If a concept is a little more difficult than usual, don’t hesitate about repeating.  Just make the repetition count by using a different way each time (e.g. descriptions, examples, analogies, etc.)
