How To Write Without Getting More Gray Hair

Stress is something many writers live with, especially those who work under deadlines and depend on their checks for their day-to-day subsistence.  In fact, many writers wear their gray hairs as badges of pride.  That same stressed existence doesn’t have to be your life, though.  A few slight adjustments might be able to help you keep away from that rut.

Focus on major tasks. When you have big writing jobs with plenty of details to cover, it’s important to focus on big ticket items – the ones that will pay off the most for your writing.  That’s a much nicer proposition compared to obsessing over details the entire time.

Set realistic goals. Be realistic about your writing.  I’ve seen so many people think they can pull off tens of thousands of words in a single sitting when all they can really manage is a few couple thousand in an entire workday.  The more your work schedule misses your actual work output, the worse the stress you’re going to end up experiencing.

Clean up. Many writers I know work at home and their workspaces are a mess.  Chaos breeds stress.  Hire a maid to come in once a week if you must.

Manage your time wisely. Set aside working periods and impose your limits.  The less your personal and professional activities overlap, the easier it is to leave your work in front of the computer, as opposed to carrying it with you the rest of the day.

Use the proper tools. Plenty of tools can shave off your work time considerably, allowing you to breathe a little easier.  Use things like automated grammar checkers and style editing software to relieve yourself of such routine tasks.

Do those things and you’ll be able to work with a little less stress gnawing at you.  Everyone deserves to be able to work in peace and you will.
