How To Turn Yourself Into A Better Writer

It’s tough to go from zero to hero.  However, improving incrementally is something that everyone can do with their writing abilities.

1.  Spend more time practicing. Everyone gets better with practice.  In Malcolm Gladwell’s Outliers, he quantified the baseline amount of work you need to put in to have a chance at being great: 10,000 hours.  Do you even come close?  How much more do you think you have to go?

2. Face your limitations. Have you identified your biggest sticking points?  Some of them can be solved easily (e.g. you have poor grammar, you employ a writing correction software).  If you have ones that you can’t solve head-on, then find ways to transcend them, to not make them matter.2

3. Be willing to wait for success. There are no overnight successes.  Even the ones who win talent shows on TV have been working at it their whole lives (even though they don’t show it). Everyone who’s ever become successful have shed their sweat and tears along the way.  Keep that in mind while you wait to achieve your goals.  In the meantime, enjoy the small successes along the way.

4. Actively seek out challenge. If you find yourself stagnating as a writer or bored out of your wits, you’re likely not putting yourself in a stimulating situations.  Actively find challenges that will help take you to the next level.
