Grammar Software Doesn’t Just Fix Writing, It Improves It

When most people think of grammar software, they think of a tool that fixes our grammar and spelling errors.  What many don’t realize, however, is that modern writing programs do so much more than just correct your work.  They improve it.

We don’t just mean marginal improvements, either.   In fact, if you put the before and after versions of an article that’s been pushed through a grammar software right next to each other, you can really tell the difference.

Aside from the usual spelling and grammar, in what ways can a writing software improve your work?  Here are some of them:

  • Wordiness.  Some of the better grammar software can check wordy constructions and alert you to them.   Most of the time, they’ll give suggestions about what you can do to fix the issue, too.
  • Precision.  A grammar program can help you find more precise words to convey your meaning.   Just use the suggestions feature or the built-in thesaurus .
  • Empty adjectives.  They can alert you to your use of empty adjectives, such as “nice,” “good” and “very.”  In some cases, they could make suggestions, too.  Of course, you can always use the built-in thesaurus to find new words if the suggestions don’t quite cut it.
  • Style.  The more advanced grammar software now includes style checkers, which can help polish your work to follow whatever style guidelines you wish to follow (e.g. MLA, AP).
